At the Side of the Road there was a Person Selling Feet!

In the book "Mouse Tales" there's a story called "The Journey" where every time the mouse needs something new there is someone on the side of the road selling that thing.

WELL, in the same spirit, you will never guess what just opened about three blocks away from our new house. A HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORE! It's not a big one, but the first time I walked in, I found a window that is exactly what we need for our front room (within a couple of inches)...for $125! The super nice restore crew delivered it on Thursday AND hauled away the sinks, cabinets, and doors that we had been intending to drop off.

Yes, I know that "a few inches different" could spell trouble. The thing that made this purchase possible is that Jonathan's dad will be here in a few weeks!

Pinterest 1973

About 40 years ago, the previous owners of this house decided to install cork board on the upper half of door-side wall in each of the smaller bedrooms. I can just see this idea popping up on a 1970's pinterest... "great for the kids room!"

We scraped it off back in March during Spring Break (when we actually had large chunks of time to work on the house). It took about 8 hours. Unfortunately, the walls are a complete mess--we can't get the adhesive off, and in a few places, chunks of the drywall paper came off with the cork board.

We're fortunate to have several house-savy friends who have stopped by to lend a hand and give advice.  The consensus is that we COULD sand the adhesive and mud over the the drywall breaches, but we'd have to texture the wall, which would look weird in an untextured house. SO, we'll be tearing out the drywall and all of that effort to scrape off the disgusting cork was for naught. Except that we are wiser now!!
